What cities or municipalities support Parking Mobility?
Where can Parking Mobility be used? In which cities or countries does it work?
-
Parking Mobility can be used anywhere in the world to add or find existing parking spaces or to suggest where disabled parking should be added.
For reporting people parking without placards, we currently have a trial running in Vancouver, BC. This allows people to report when they see a car parked illegally without a placard or identification in a disabled parking spot.
We encourage users everywhere to report violations wherever they occur. If we see more reporting in a certain area, it will be easier to get that city or municipality to recognize how much of an issue abuse of disabled parking is. It will also show how engaged the community is in solving this problem.
We take the evidence that the user provides and share this with the municipality and they send a ticket to the owner of the car. In the future, we will be sharing a portion of the revenue from these tickets with users.
As we move forward we will be adding more and more cities who are participating with Parking Mobility.
Tell us where you are and what challenges and opportunities there are around accessibility in your community.- view 1 more comment

debbiedmobile February 16, 2011 00:39my town is tiny..it would make more sense for states to set up a system..with the state and town splitting the profits. there are only a few HC spots in my town and I'm never near them, not to mention my town has blatantly violated ADA....people will argue it can't be done because it is a town issue..but states can contract with towns to be the intermediary....there's probably hundreds of towns in my state alone--most of the violations I see are in other towns.EditDeleteRemove

debbiedmobile February 16, 2011 00:42there is HC parking in my apartment complex. i've seen an issue a couple times, but i wouldn't dare report a neighbor. the biggest issue is with a women who works at a childrens hospital who tends to park half way on the access aisle.....she does have a placard and may be walking with a limp, but nothing to explain why she parks on the access aisle...if she did need the room, she could back into the space to have her door open on the access aisle...one day I couldn't get my wheelchair past.EditDeleteRemove

I would like this available everywhere, but am unsure of it's effectiveness unless municipalities, counties or at least state legislatures are included in the information loop.

Denny: You are right on! We are working with a number of cities to accept and use Parking Mobility's data to send tickets to owners of cars. If you or others you know are interested in getting your city to act on reports from Parking Mobility, please let us know. We will help you get connected with other organizations and people in your area to make it happen.

Unfortunately, as fines have risen, few people any longer just park in a HC space without a permit. They use illegal permits. That behaviour is very hard for anyone to enforce if the states are not willing to do so, and, despite a few examples on your site and on Facebook, states and local police departments are largely unwilling to do anything about cars that have a permit regardless how obvious the fraud. I am well aware that there are hidden disabilities as severe as mine, but I have pointed out borrowed permits and permits issued to long deseased relatives, and the state is unwilling to do anything about even obvious situations like that. I think the enforcement organizations (police and MVA) do not appreciate how central parking is to a really disabled person who wants to be a part of society. Also, however, I think we have to be willing to examine what is really important. Much of the cheating in urban areas s a result of handicapped parking being free. Yet, when the police do try to take on illegal use by revisiting whether free parking creates more problems than it solves, many organizations automatically push back. We are too used to free parking, too. But paid handicapped parking is far better than free parking taken up by SUVs and Jaguars. In many parts of the US, this system is just plain broken, and, while this is a good idea, it is only part of the solution. Something needs to be done about those willing to illegally use someone else's permit or doctors willing to approve a permit for virtually anyone. Sadly, a medical practice is a business, too, and, like any other business, they can't afford angry customers. Many states have virtually delegated this program to the medical community, yet refuse to do any oversight. The whole system needs an overhaul and we all have to be willing to give up some of our sacred cows, or the system never will work. Thanks, however, for trying to do something.

Debbie:
You are right, we need more trial cities. We have had some resistance from cities who typically do not see it as a problem or a priority. We have changed our business model and our now working with a number of national disability charities to get cities on board.
If you would like to help get your city on board, please contact me and I will connect you with organizations in your area.

I Live in Roanke,VA and we are an ever growing small city. We have a number of locations that offer HC parling but no enforcement at all. I see this all the time.
WalMart offers a large number of regular HC parking along with van HC parking.
However they are always taken by those who do not have HC plates or HC Tags.
It not unusual for you to not to be able to find one single HC parking place becuase others without HC tags or plates have taken them. Wal-Mart says they can't enforce the parking because they only lease the property.
This is why I downloaded your app. But I'm still having the issues with my GPS not working. I've sent in a log file bit have not heard back yet.
Hopefully I can resolve this. Even my employer will not enforce this issue. My own Supervisior park in one of 3 spaces we have at work and he is not handicapped.
It's very frustrating. I'm truly hoping my issue can be resolved.
Very Respectfully,
Alex W
