snow plowed into handicap spaces
I have a question...with the snow months almost on us, have you noticed when the parking lots are plowed they always push the snow into the handicap parking spots? I am not sure if the snow plow companies are aware they are doing this.... I asked one once and he stated there was no other place to put the snow. I had to park further away and walk.... while he sit in his warm truck and smiled as I walked by. I asked the store owners if they were aware of this...was told it was not up to them. I am confused on how the plow companies can block in the parking spaces with snow. Anyone have any suggestions??? Have a wonderful day!!!

Debora, a great question. I spend time in Calgary and I know first-hand your concern. My guess is that this situation falls between the cracks of city/county laws. We have focused the last few months on Texas, and Texas' statute concerning disabled parking makes both (i) parking in a spot with proper ID and (ii) blocking a spot (or ramp, hashmarks, curb-cut, etc) a violation. Of course, there's not much snow in Texas so this isn't an issue here. It seems that each city/county would need to create an ordinance making snow-piling in a disabled spot a violation...and placing responsibility on the plow operator. It's something we will look into to!
